Julia R. Gefter, Ph.D.

Dr. Julia Gefter is a licensed psychologist providing individual counseling for adults and young adults. She has worked extensively with individuals coming from complicated and diverse backgrounds, and her practice is respectful and accepting of people from all walks of life. Dr. Gefter views therapy as an active and collaborative process of helping clients enhance mindful and compassionate self-awareness, connect with values, sort out conflicts, and develop new skills. Her style is warm, empathic, and practical, and she uses humor when appropriate.

Dr. Gefter has extensive experience with clients who:

  • Are experiencing depression and/or anxiety
  • Are encountering challenges navigating recent life adjustments and transitions
  • Have been survivors of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, and/or bullying
  • Are experiencing grief or loss
  • Want to improve the quality of relationships
  • Are LGBTQ
  • Are struggling with inner conflict related to perfectionism, people-pleasing, and self-criticism

Dr. Gefter takes an integrative, flexible approach to therapy in which she uses DBT, CBT, Internal Family Systems, strengths-based, and trauma-informed therapies to strive for a unique balance of practical skill building and increased understanding of how past experiences may influence the present.

Dr. Gefter received her bachelor’s degree from Boston University, and her master’s and doctoral degrees from Suffolk University in Boston, MA. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Princeton House Behavioral Health, a division of Princeton Health, training in Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy and Women’s Issues. She went on to complete a postdoctoral clinical fellowship in the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, with specialization in intimate relationships and recovery from interpersonal trauma. Dr. Gefter sees clients in our Cambridge office.
