Riikka Melartin, Psy.D.

Clinical Manager, Psychologist & Counselor   |   Cambridge, MA

Dr. Melartin is a licensed psychologist who provides individual therapy, couples and premarital counseling, and consultation for clients diverse in age, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. She views individuals from a strength and growth perspective, regardless of their challenges or history. While she appreciates the power of past experience, she believes that the past does not have to dictate the future, and that change is always possible. Her approach varies depending on the issues of individual clients and Dr. Melartin draws from her training in insight-oriented therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, couples and family theory, and as well neuropsychology (the study of brain-behavior interaction.) Particular interests include, but are not limited to:

  • Transition to parenthood and parenting challenges
  • Relationship and communication issues
  • Divorce and post-divorce adjustment
  • Grief and loss
  • Coping with trauma or chronic stress
  • The role of cultural factors in people’s lives
  • The role of gender and sexuality in clients’ lives (sex positivity)

Dr. Melartin earned a Doctorate in Psychology from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (now William James College.) Her APA-accredited Internship at the Beaverbrook Guidance Center included training in child, adult, group and family therapy. Postdoctoral fellowships included the Boston College Counseling Center, the Behavioral Neurology Department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and The Learning Evaluation Center at McClean Hospital. In addition to her position at CPA, Dr. Melartin worked for many years as a school psychologist and as a neuropsychologist in private practice.
